Materials and construction methods
Many buildings use a combination of materials, which can result in cost savings, increased thermal (heat) efficiency, increased acoustic (sound) efficiency and ease of construction.
Typical materials used in structural and non-structural construction work include the following:
- cavity brick
- concrete blocks
- structural steel
- timber
As well as the variety of materials, construction methods these days also vary, for example:
- brick veneer and cladding over timber-framed and lightweight section steel-framed construction
- cavity brick construction
- earth-wall construction
- lightweight concrete construction, such as the construction of AAC
- pole frame construction
- portal frame construction
- post and beam construction
- post and truss construction
- single-leaf (reinforced) masonry construction
- tilt-slab construction
