How to Hold Wall Frames Safely While Lifting

Charles Christodoulou: I’ll tell you a little trick, Steve. When you lift, say, a six-metre length of wall, before you lift it, get a stud…the long piece of timber…and nail it near the top so it pivots.
Charles Christodoulou: When you lift the wall, that timber pivots with it and forms about a 45-degree.
Charles Christodoulou: Then, with a concrete nail, nail a small piece of timber…about 300 long…into the concrete and rest the pivoting timber on it so the wall won’t fall back.
Charles Christodoulou: That takes the weight.
(You basically tilt the wall, or tilt the bit up to the wall.)
Charles Christodoulou: Yes. And that will help you greatly.

Use a quick brace-as-you-lift method:

  1. Nail a stud near the top of the wall frame so it can pivot.
  2. Lift the wall; the loose stud will swing up and form a rough 45° brace.
  3. Fix a small timber block (~300 mm) to the slab with a concrete nail.
  4. Rest the brace on that block so the wall can’t fall back.
  5. With two people, adjust the position and fix the frame properly.
