Does iBuild support upper-storey extensions above existing homes?

(The home I want to build is an upper-storey extension on an existing Bessa block house, and I’ve had engineers working on the plan for two years.)

Charles Christodoulou: Good evening. Problem number one, Darren – I’ll stop you there. iBuild will not do an extension, especially an upstairs addition. I’ll explain the reason. The new extension may compromise the existing building, or the existing building may compromise the new work. That opens up questions about responsibility, and iBuild is not a registered builder, so we can’t control any of that.

Generally, no. iBuild does not supply kits for extensions to existing homes, including upper-storey additions or projects that tie into an existing structure.

Why iBuild generally doesn’t do extensions

  • Extensions can compromise the existing building, or the existing structure can compromise the new work, creating unclear responsibility.

  • iBuild is not a registered builder, so it cannot take structural responsibility for integrating new and old buildings.

If you already have plans under way

While the general position is no extensions, a senior project manager may review edge cases. If you have engineering documentation or plans in progress, email them to us so a senior project manager can review them. There’s no promise of acceptance, but we can advise next steps.
