Materials and construction methods

Many buildings use a combination of materials, which can result in cost savings, increased thermal (heat) efficiency, increased acoustic (sound) efficiency and ease of construction.

Typical materials used in structural and non-structural construction work include the following:

  1. cavity brick
  2. concrete blocks
  3. structural steel
  4. timber

As well as the variety of materials, construction methods these days also vary, for example:

  1. brick veneer and cladding over timber-framed and lightweight section steel-framed construction
  2. cavity brick construction
  3. earth-wall construction
  4. lightweight concrete construction, such as the construction of AAC
  5. pole frame construction
  6. portal frame construction
  7. post and beam construction
  8. post and truss construction
  9. single-leaf (reinforced) masonry construction
  10. tilt-slab construction
