One question we often get asked from our clients is about 6 star energy rating. Can iBuild kit homes achieve 6 star energy rating? Before answering this question, let’s first understand what factors determine the compliance of 6 Star Energy Rating.
Six Factors Influencing the Compliance of 6 Star Energy Rating
No matter you are building a new house or renovating an old one, your house must meet the National Construction Code (NCC) Energy Efficiency Requirements. This NCC Energy Efficiency provision includes a 6 star energy rating upgrade option. This option takes into account of the building envelope performance, which includes the performance of roof, walls, floor and windows. In some states such as Victoria, 6 star energy rating is a mandatory requirement.
There are six major factors to be considered in the thermal performance assessment to determine the compliance with 6 star requirements:
- Selection of construction materials
- Window glazing specification
- Site location
- Orientation (how the house is orientated towards the sun)
- Efficiency standard for lighting (exclude plug-in appliances)
- Insulation details
Note in some states, new buildings are also required to have either a solar hot water system or a rainwater tank installed.
Take-Home Tips
From the information above, you can see that the factors that influence the certification of 6 star energy rating not only includes the “Kit Home Products”, but also site location, building orientation and selected in-house appliances. For instance, you can incorporate some passive design principles into your house such as north facing, extended eaves, and upgrade to double-glazed windows.
All of iBuild’s kit home products and modular home products are designed to meet a minimum of 6 star energy rating. We will provide an energy report to our clients as part of our standard inclusion. Here at iBuild, no matter where you are and what you want, your needs will always be carefully considered.
