Australia-China Modular Construction Technology Forum 2019

An Australia-China Collaboration

In conjunction with Monash University, Kingbuilt Homes and Tongji University, iBuild co-chaired the first Australia-China Modular Construction Technology Forum over a 2-day conference. With more than 80 participants and speakers from Australia, China, Singapore, Malaysia and USA, this inaugural event was a huge success in promoting collaborations between iBuild and leading researchers and practitioners worldwide.

Construction technologies have seen remarkable progress and innovations in recent years, most significantly in Australia and China. With such rapid developments, this conference sought to bring together those in this industry to discuss both the demand and engineering challenges within modular construction technology currently available to us, and its potential for the future. This also provided a space for industry members to share ideas and establish networks. Highlights included discussion on the 44-level volumetric modular tower, the world’s tallest modular building set for Croydon, as well as the use of prefabrication in other major construction projects. Other topics, among others, include modular design and structural performances, and structural and non-structural connections.

This conference was not only confined to the meeting room; participants also had the privilege of site visits to 80 Collins, M-City and Australia 108, the highest residential skyscraper in the Southern Hemisphere.

Conference attendee Mubashir found the event ‘enlightening’, with speeches from experts in the field of modular construction. “The conference was packed with enlightening speeches from experts in the field of modular construction,” said the engineering student from The University of Melbourne. “I appreciated that there was representation from the industry and academia of both countries.”

This event was sponsored by the Australian Government Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, and supported by MP Frank McGuire and various leading Australian and Chinese Universities including The University of Melbourne and Beijing University of Technology. The first of its kind, iBuild hopes to host the second forum in 2020.
