For Michael and his family, space was becoming an issue. With six people living in a three-bedroom home, everyday life was getting cramped – especially when it came to simple routines like showering. Looking for a practical and affordable solution, Michael and his partner started exploring granny flat options.

Neat, Compact, and Versatile
Michael chose the Kit Homes Portland because of its practical layout and compact size, which was essential for council approval. A larger design might not have been permitted, so the Portland was the perfect choice.
To make the space work better for their needs, Michael customised the design by moving the bedrooms to opposite sides of the original plan. This small adjustment made a big difference in creating a comfortable living space.
Taking on the Build as an Owner-Builder
Michael opted for the lock-up kit and took on the challenge of being an owner-builder. He knew that while purchasing the kit was one expense, construction costs could often double the overall price. By managing the build himself, he was able to significantly reduce costs.
The journey was overwhelming at first, but as the project progressed, things became easier. By the end, Michael found himself enjoying the process, taking pride in the work and appreciating the high-quality materials that made the build worthwhile.
