Kit Homes Kanacea Island, Fiji

Kit Homes Seymour on Kanacea Island, Fiji

iBuild has supplied a multi-building kit home project to Kanacea Island, Lau Province, Fiji, for Poufosa Investments Limited – three Kit Homes Seymour homes and a custom-designed dining hall, all engineered to C4 cyclonic wind conditions with cyclone-rated steel framing.

Kit Homes Fiji Video: Hear From Our Project Managers

Antonie Marian: At iBuild, we design our homes based on Australian building standards, but for overseas projects like Fiji, we understand the local requirements are equally important.

Antonie Marian: A domestic project is mainly about design, manufacturing and construction. An overseas project is about delivering a complete solution across borders.

Antonie Marian: We are not only supplying a home, we are managing a supply chain, protecting materials during transport and ensuring the product arrives ready to be installed.

Timothy Zeng: The logistics process starts with carefully planning how the home will be packed into containers. Materials are prepared and protected specifically for shipping.

Timothy Zeng: Fiji’s environment requires careful material selection. We consider factors such as cyclone resistance, high humidity, salt exposure and corrosion.

Timothy Zeng: With the right preparation and a clear process, an Australian designed home can be successfully delivered for international locations like Fiji.

Why Choose iBuild

Kanacea Island sits in the remote Lau group of eastern Fiji – a chain of islands known for rugged coastline, warm tropical waters and full exposure to the Pacific’s cyclone season. iBuild was engaged to design, engineer, manufacture and supply all four buildings and to get them there.

The project reflects iBuild’s growing capability across the South Pacific. Following participation in the Australian Trade and Investment Commission’s Building and Construction Mission in Suva, iBuild has progressively expanded its international supply reach, building on earlier experience delivering kit homes to Tonga and the Cook Islands. For kit homes in Fiji, Kanacea Island is a clear demonstration that Australian-designed kit homes can be supplied well beyond the mainland.

Supplying a kit home to a cyclonic tropical environment demands more than applying a standard Australian design. iBuild’s team worked closely with local consultants and engineers to make sure the designs complied with Fiji’s building regulations and suited the island’s conditions.

Fiji's environment requires careful material selection. We consider factors such as cyclone resistance, high humidity, salt exposure and corrosion. Materials need to be durable and suitable for tropical conditions, while the design also needs to consider ventilation, moisture management and long-term performance.

Each of the four buildings was designed with cyclone-rated steel framing and screw pile foundations suited to the island’s ground conditions. A geotechnical investigation was completed for the Kanacea Island site, informing both the foundation design and the structural engineering for the Seymour homes and the dining hall.

Packing, Shipping and Logistics

Export projects need a different level of planning compared with domestic supply. Every component is checked for suitability, packaging requirements and transport conditions before it leaves the factory.

For this project, iBuild’s production team calculated and coordinated nine 20-foot containers by sea freight from Melbourne to Suva – covering steel frames, flooring, windows, cladding and finishing materials. Materials were prepared and protected specifically for international shipping, with customs clearance and local delivery arrangements coordinated before the containers arrived. Good planning at the packing stage is critical. Every container has limited space, and the logistics process starts with carefully planning how each home will be packed. Once loaded, the containers travel by sea freight to Fiji, where customs clearance and delivery to site are coordinated with the on-ground team.

Clear Process Across Borders

A domestic project is mainly about design, manufacturing and construction. An overseas project adds international freight, customs clearances, local labour coordination and detailed documentation at every stage. iBuild’s approach focused on clear responsibilities between the Australian design and production team and the local site team in Fiji.

Communication is the key. We use detailed drawings, documentation, and regular communication with local teams to make sure everyone understands the process.

With materials delivered and construction progressing on Kanacea Island, the project shows that Australian-designed, cyclone-rated kit homes can be supplied to remote Pacific islands with the right planning – stronger, smarter, faster and more affordable.
