A Retirement Home Built to Weather the Coast: Stephen and Sandra’s Agnes Water Build Begins
Located in Agnes Water, a coastal town in central Queensland near the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, Stephen and Sandra’s project sits on a two-hectare acreage block – a small, tourism-focused community known for its fishing and surfing.
The plan is a new home the recently retired couple will build themselves and live in.
“We bought an acreage block in central Queensland, at Agnes Water, and we’ve just retired – so we’re going to do our own owner-builder project to live in.”
Doing the Research
Stephen and Sandra came across iBuild through a YouTube reviewer comparing kit homes across Australia. Weighing up the designs and the support teams on offer, they liked what they saw. But for a couple building in a C2 cyclone region, the question that mattered most was whether a kit home could really stand up to the weather – and it was a single story that answered it.
They had seen iBuild’s footage from Mt Beppo, in the Brisbane Valley, where a couple just one week into assembling their kit home were caught by Cyclone Alfred – the first cyclone the area had seen in more than three decades. The frame was only partially secured, not yet locked in. The next morning, it was still standing, undisturbed and intact.
“We saw the footage and read the story – it was quite amazing. That was another one that actually tipped us towards you guys.”
Living in a cyclone-rated part of central Queensland, that kind of real-world reassurance carried real weight.
“The price was good, number one. And the options to upgrade or stick with base-level fit-outs is really good for us. We’re in central Queensland, so we’re in a C2 cyclone rating – and you’ve really taken that into account, giving me a decent amount of information about what the structure needs to be to get to that spec level.”
Getting Underway
Stephen and Sandra chose the Tamworth design, drawn in part by iBuild’s openness to the changes they wanted to make. They’ve opted for a steel frame – a common choice for cyclone-rated Queensland builds.
From a YouTube search to a firm decision, Stephen and Sandra now have a clear path to the home they’ll retire into. It’s the start of a journey they have been looking forward to: the chance to build their own home in a way that’s stronger, smarter, faster and more affordable.
