Building Closer Together: Deborah’s Home Extension With iBuild

Paradise is an established suburb in Adelaide’s north-east, in the state of South Australia. It is where Deborah lives and where she is planning to extend her existing property to create space for her daughter and four grandchildren.

“I need to provide housing for my daughter and her four children. And as I’m getting older, I can still live with her and have her assistance, while providing her with housing as well.”

Choosing iBuild

Deborah had first been in contact with iBuild’s Charles around two years earlier. The timing wasn’t right then. In the interim, she pursued other options – from renovation firms visits to several other kit home companies across Adelaide – yet none of them produced what she was looking for.

“I went to several different kit home places in Adelaide and none of them could give me what I was actually looking for.”

She returned to iBuild. It was Charles, again, who made the difference.

The Project

Deborah’s project involves constructing and connecting a new dwelling to the existing home. The result will be treated as an extension rather than a standalone structure – a distinction that shapes the approvals pathway. She has opted into iBuild’s approvals service to manage the planning and building permit process on her behalf.

Timber framing has been chosen for the build, which also suits the budget. Deborah’s sons – one with experience in submarine construction, another with constructing high-rise buildings – will be on the tools through the assembly stage. 

The Path Forward

For Deborah, this was never about adding square metres to a property. It was about making sure her daughter has a place to land, her grandchildren have room to grow, and that she has the people around her she’ll need as she gets older. After a two years of waiting for the timing to be right , Deborah’s plans are finally moving forward.
