Building Forward: Richard’s Warrnambool Build Begins
Located in Warrnambool, a coastal city in southwest Victoria, Richard’s project will be a home for himself – but his motivation reaches beyond his own four walls.
“Affordable housing is a big thing. I have two grown-up kids, and I’m hoping to help them – if I can build them an iBuild house as well, or together we can, I think that’ll be one of the most valuable things I could do for them.”
Doing the Research
Richard came across iBuild through online searches and videos he first found on YouTube, with customer testimonials helping firm up his decision. Having built a house himself once before, he was weighing a build he could realistically take on again.
Turning to kit home suppliers in Victoria, it was a particular iBuild design – the Mackay – that drew him in, matching almost exactly the floor plan he’d already drawn up. After attending an iBuild Open for Inspection Event, where he met the team and saw a real display home, Richard signed his contracts in the days that followed.
“Your costings are good and very explicitly laid out – it’s very clear what you’re getting and not getting. I’d built a house myself previously, but I’m 25 years older now, and I wanted to be sure it was something I could build myself. You could supply the frame in steel, and that’s going to be important for me in allowing me to put the frame up myself.”
Getting Underway
Richard chose the Mackay design, which suited his brief so closely he isn’t proposing any changes to the floor plan. He’s opted for a steel frame – a choice that, for him, makes putting the frame up himself more manageable. To complement his plans to owner-build his project, Richard has enrolled in a building construction certificate course to deepen his understanding of the process.
With a supportive team behind him, the project he’s been steadily planning is taking shape. For Richard, it’s the start of something he sees as more than a single build – a home to call his own now, and the experience and confidence to help his children into homes of their own down the track.
